ABSTRACT:
In this talk I will discuss a range of ongoing efforts to better understand burstiness (term re-occurrence) in text and what it means for information retrieval, to characterize the shape of trends observed in Twitter, to speed up forensic analysis through index-free search and to develop scalable classification and learning-to-rank algorithms.

BIO:
Mark Carman is a lecturer at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He joined Monash in 2010 after spending three years as a postdoc at the USI Università della Svizzera italiana. He received his PhD from the University of Trento in 2006, after studying at the Fondazione Bruno Kessler and the Information Sciences Institute of USC. Mark works primarily in information retrieval, applying statistical machine learning techniques to the modelling of users and user-generated content. He has served on the program committees of SIGIR, ECIR, AAAI-AIW and ICWSM and reviewed for TKDE and IP&M.
