Embedded system security: can we trust our devices

ABSTRACT:
In this talk we will address the topic of security in current and future embedded systems. After a brief presentation of the general threat model we will detail different contributions leading to the definition of a trusted system. Presented solutions are mainly focusing on FPGA devices but some can be extended to ASIC. First the SAFE architecture will be described. This contribution aims to develop a system where the security level can be adjusted at run-time depending on the threat level. Security has a high cost, mitigating this cost is always a critical issue. Then, a solution to protect the external memory will be described. Various security policies will be detailed and illustrated through several applications. An extension to secure the system boot-up will then be presented. The communication architecture is also a critical component within an embedded system, some solutions to increase its security level will be presented. Finally the conclusion will draw some open problems concerning the hardware/software integration within secured embedded systems.

BIO:
Guy Gogniat received the M.S.E.E. degree from the University of Paris Sud, Orsay, France, in 1995, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Nice-Sophia, Antipolis, France, in 1997. He is currently a Professor in electrical and computer engineering with the University of Bretagne-Sud, Lorient, France, where he has been since 1998. In 2005, he spent one year as an invited Researcher with the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA, where he worked on embedded system security using reconfigurable technologies.
His work focuses on embedded systems design methodologies and tools. He also conducts research in the domain of reconfigurable and adaptive computing and embedded system security.
