The Faculty of Informatics is pleased to announce a seminar given by Verena Kantere

DATE: Wednesday, April 24th, 2013
PLACE: USI Università della Svizzera italiana, room A13, Red building (Via G. Buffi 13)
TIME: 09.30

ABSTRACT:
Cloud computing is nowadays synonymous to computing services offered by large-scale infrastructures. The key to the success of cloud computing is to provide seamless and efficient management of big dynamic disseminated data collections, such as scientific data, in order to maximize their availability and optimize complex query analytics, while minimizing capital expenditure. This talk gives an overview of our existing, ongoing and future work on the creation of a cloud-based system that provides services on such data residing in multiple heterogeneous data stores. This work includes a data service cost model and investment scheme, a model for the prediction of cost amortization and a pricing scheme, which enable efficient cloud data management while following policies tightly bound to the technical solutions. Furthermore, the work includes automated optimization of data management and adaptation of the storage system to the workload and data characteristics. Finally, it includes the creation and efficient management of SLAs for the provided data services.

BIO:
Verena Kantere is a Senior Researcher and the Excellence Grant Holder at the Institute of Services Science in the University of Geneva (UniGe) working towards the provision and exchange of data services in cloud computing environments, focusing on the management of big data and performance of big data analytics, by developing methods, algorithms and fully fledged systems. Before coming to UniGe she was a tenure-track junior assistant professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT). She has received an Electrical and Computer Engineering Diploma and a Ph.D. from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), and a M.Sc. from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto (UofT), where she also started her Ph.D. studies. After the completion of her Ph.D. studies she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). During her graduate studies she developed methods, algorithms and fully fledged systems for data exchange and coordination in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) overlays with structured and unstructured data, focusing on the solution of problems of data heterogeneity and multi-dimensionality, query processing and rewriting, and management of continuous queries. Furthermore, she has shown interest and work in the field of the Semantic Web, concerning the problem of semantic similarity, annotation, clustering and integration.
