The mechanical behavior of biological soft tissue can be described by anisotropic, hyperelastic elasticity models. Such models can represented by polyconvex strain energy functions with parameters which can be fitted to data from experiments. These models typically also incorporate a term to enforce the incompressibility. Domain decomposition methods of the FETI type are fast and robust solvers suitable for problems in structural mechanics and by design suited for parallelization. The biomechanics of arterial walls poses special challenges for iterative methods as a result of the nonlinear, anisotropic behavior. In this talk aspects of the hyperelastic models and the solver environment are discussed and numerical results showing the robustness of the domain decomposition solver are presented.
Oliver Rheinbach studied Mathematics and in Business Informatics at the University of Cologne; he received his diplomas in 2002. Starting from 2002, he was an assistant in Mathematics and Civil Engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen and received his Ph.D. in 2006 under the supervision of Axel Klawonn. Since 2007, he is a research fellow at the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
