Exploring the role of public situated displays in a rural community

Decanato - Facoltà di scienze informatiche

Data d'inizio: 16 Novembre 2011

Data di fine: 17 Novembre 2011

The Faculty of Informatics is pleased to announce a seminar given by Keith Cheverst

DATE: Wednesday, November 16th, 2011
PLACE: USI Università della Svizzera italiana, room A14, Red building (Via G. Buffi 13)
TIME: 13.30

ABSTRACT:
In this talk I will discuss our exploration of the ways in which a situated digital display deployment has been able to support and forster notions of community in a rural community in the north of England. Our approach has been to follow a user centered design process in order to engage the community as much as possible with the development of the deployment, Furthermore, we have taken explicit steps, such as the implementation appropriate content moderation mechanisms, in order to provide the community with a sense of ownership over the deployment and associated content (which includes both photos and local news and advertisements). One challenge for our research has been to finally 'let go' of the deployment (after approximately 3 years) and pass overall responsibility for maintenance etc. to the community.

BIO:
Dr Keith Cheverst is a Senior Lecturer with Lancaster University's School of Computing and Communications. His research over the last decade has focused on exploring the obdurate problems associated with the user-centred design of interactive systems (typically systems that utilise mobile and/or ubicomp technologies) in complex or semi-wild settings and the deployment and longitudinal study of these systems in order to gain insights into issues of user adoption and appropriation. He has been involved in mobile/ubicomp research for over 15 years and has published in excess of 130 research articles.
