Simultaneous measurements of EEG and fMRI (functional magnet resonance imaging) become a more and more common tool in modern neuroscience as they combine good temporal resolution with good spatial resolution. However, small motions of the body or the head caused by the heartbeat lead to movement of a conductor in the strong magnetic field of the scanner and thus induce severe artifacts. In cooperation with the BION Institute for Neuroimaging we developed a method to detect and remove this artifact which is based on a wavelet autocoherence of the channels and masking out the artifact in the wavelet transformation domain.
Tomas Sauer received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Erlangen in 1993. He is currently a Professor for Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computing at Justus-Liebig-University Gießen. Prof. Sauer has published over 80 papers in the professional literature and serves as an Editor for Advances in Computational Mathematics.
