ABSTRACT:
Thanks to steady price decrease and continuous technological improvements, reliable and easy-to-use eye trackers are now relatively widespread.
Eye-based interaction has been studied and applied in several contexts: many applications can be found, for example, in Psychology, Psychophysics, Neuroscience, Usability, and Advertising, where it may be useful to obtain the path followed by the user's eyes when looking at something (e.g. a picture or a web page), and possibly to get indications about those areas of the screen which were most watched.
On the other hand, in the context of Human-Computer Communication the application field which deserves most attention is undoubtedly that of assistive technologies: interfaces operated through the eyes can be of great help for people with severe disabilities, allowing them to use their gaze to interact with the computer.
In this talk some recent eye tracking projects/researches carried out at the University of Pavia will be presented and discussed - namely Eye-S (a full-screen eye input modality), e5Learning (a user-aware e- learning environment), WeyeB (an eye-controlled web browser), and a few investigations regarding on line newspapers and ad banners.
 
BIO:
Marco Porta  is currently a contract researcher and professor at the Università di Pavia (Pavia, Italy), teaching in the Faculty of Engineering and in joint faculties.
He received the Dr. Eng. (Master) degree in Electronic Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano (Milan, Italy) in 1996 and the Ph.D.
degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the Università di Pavia in 1999.
He is now member of the Computer Vision & Multimedia Lab of the Computer and Systems Engineering Department of the Università di Pavia. His research interests include vision-based perceptive user interfaces, eye tracking applications, visual languages, e-learning, information presentation, multimedia interfaces and Human-Computer Interaction in general.
