TITLE: Controlling complex physical systems through Planning and Scheduling integration with OMPS

ABSTRACT:

The need for AI based planning and scheduling tools for controlling
complex physical systems is constantly growing in many fields.
The design of these applications has mainly followed two distinct
directions:  on one hand, domain dependent, specific applications;
on the other, domain independent, general planning and/or scheduling
systems which are customized by changing the domain descriptions.
 
In our work a direction which lies in between the previous two approaches
has been followed,
driven by the interest in space related applications and starting from
general
issues like: what do current P&S applications for space have in common?
What (and how) can be re-used from different space planning and
scheduling applications without loosing generality or efficiency?
Is it possible to design a framework for rapid prototyping of AI P&S
space systems?
 
Being driven by these questions an integrated
planning and scheduling architecture, called OMPS (Open
Multi-Component P&S System) has been developed.
This talk will describe the design principles of OMPS, a system based
on the concept of timelines  representing temporal sequences of
events in a rather intuitive way, followed by the description of a
component-based implementation of this
general ideas. The aim of the component based approach is to exploit
the advantages of both general planning - needed for P&S applications rapid
prototyping - and efficient,
domain-specific computation - often needed in deployed applications for
space domains.

BIO:

Simone Fratini is a project research scientist at the Institute of
Cognitive Science and Technology of the Italian National Research
Council (ISTC-CNR).  In the past years he has followed PhD studies in
Computer Science Engineering at the University of Rome "La Sapienza"
in parallel with an associate research position at CNR.  During his
PhD he spent almost one year at the "Intelligent Coordination and
Logistics Laboratory" of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh as
a visiting scholar.
 
His research interests include AI (artificial intelligence) planning
and scheduling, temporal and resource reasoning, expressive domain

modeling languages for planning and scheduling, constraint reasoning
and software engineering for AI-based tools.
 
He has been involved in many projects with the European Space Agency
ESA) , developing advanced systems for planning and scheduling
activities for the Mars Express spacecraft and designing the APSI -
Advanced Planning and Scheduling Initiative, a research project to
investigate the use of a framework to improve the cost-effectiveness
and flexibility of the Mission Planning System development.
