TITLE: A Language Modelling Approach to Link Criminal Styles with Offender Characteristics

SPEAKER: Dr. Richard Bache, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK

DATE: Thursday, November 13th, 2008

PLACE: USI Università della Svizzera italiana, room SI-004, Informatics building (Via G. Buffi 13)

TIME: 16.30

ABSTRACT: Until recently, offender profiling was a subjective activity conducted by putative experts with little empirical underpinning. The iMOV project has developed a probabalistic approach based on Language Modelling to analyse natural language descriptions of crimes and relate them to known characteristics of offenders. Such an approach not only allows us to make inferences about the type of person who committed a crime e.g. sex, age, employed or not, but also gives insight into the different criminal behaviour of different groups.
