From triangle meshes to quad meshes: how smart we can be?

ABSTRACT:
Given a triangle mesh representing a digital object, how can you easily and semi-automatically transform it in a quad mesh suitable for rigging?

We are currently working on a technique that uses the graph defined by the skeleton of the mesh to define a collection of hexahedra containing each node of the graph and a look-up table of connections to define the boxes surrounding the arcs. These volumes are the guides for the transformation of the tri-mesh in a quad mesh. The talk will a presentation of the work in progress and the first preliminary results.

BIO:
Riccardo Scateni is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Cagliari. Prior to this he held positions at IBM USA, Cerfacs in France and CRS4 in Cagliari. His main current interests are in Geometry Processing, finding peculiar characteristics of shapes. He has been active in scientific visualization and medical imaging while holding his previous positions. He has been teaching during the years courses of Computer Graphics, Object-Oriented Programming, Formal Languages and Computational Geometry.
