So far, mesh discretizations for continua have been closely related to connectivity issues, such as neighbouring elements and cross-references between elements, edges and nodes. The Loose Element Project at ICS intends to develop a new approach of discretization that completely drops the connectivity issue, thereby gaining more flexibility for element structures and making classical finite elements more adaptable to other discretization techniques (like, for example, particle methods). In fact, the Loose Element approach shall bring forward the definition of a new, generic discretization element to govern known discretization elements like particles, PUM-patches, or finite elements and let them interact more easily in coupled simulations. Instead of connectivity data and adjacencies, element interaction will be based on extensive cut-computation. The presentation will explain the discretization idea and the current state of the software concept.
David Thomas, born in Dormagen, Germany in 1981, did his degree in mathematics at the University of Bonn in 2008. His diploma thesis about concepts of multiscale coupling applications was supervised by Prof. Dr. Rolf Krause. Since March 2009, he is a part-time associate member of the ICS at USI, in charge of the Loose Element Project.
