Beyond the Desktop: talks on the future of human-computer interaction

Staff - Faculty of Informatics

Start date: 16 December 2009

End date: 17 December 2009

The Faculty of Informatics is pleased to announce a series of talks on the future of human-computer interaction

DATE: Wednesday, December 16th, 2009
PLACE: USI Università della Svizzera italiana, room SI-008, Informatics building (Via G. Buffi 13)
TIME: 13.30

ABSTRACT:
Computers have long since moved out of dark basements and stuffy cubicles. Today, computing permeates our everyday lives in the form of PDAs, netbooks, and mobile phones. Soon, next generation embedded computing platforms will allow us to equip many of our everyday artifacts with sensing, computation, and communication capabilities, significantly altering our experience on how to interact with computers.
No longer restricted to mouse and keyboard, human computer interaction will increasingly involve voice, gestures, touch, and even "implicit" interaction modes that use sensors on our bodies or in the environment.

On Wednesday, Dec. 16, we will present the results from a semester-long PhD-course on novel human computer interfaces, in a series of talks that help to shed light on our future interactions with computers. Seven short presentations will introduce novel touch-based interaction metaphors, cover upcoming challenges for interacting in public, and describe systems and approaches for mobile interaction.

The event will be from 13:30-16:30 in SI-008, with a short "coffee & cake" break in the middle. The exact times and topics of the talks are given in the attachment. Hope to see many of you there!

HOSTS: Prof. Marc Langheinrich and Dr. Monica Landoni
