Prof. Cesare Alippi of the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA USI-SUPSI) has been appointed Fellow of the Geometric Deep Learning programme at the European Lab for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS). This is the third time that a USI researcher has been awarded this status by the prestigious organisation that promotes excellence in basic research and collaboration with industry in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Promotion to fellow status rewards the scientific excellence of the researcher.

ELLIS includes researchers and research centers in partner countries in Europe, including Switzerland and Israel, with the objective of promoting excellent basic research and training with, for example, exchange programs for researchers, workshops and summer schools for students, academics and professionals. Another equally important objective is to interact with industry downstream of independent research to enable essential knowledge transfer activities. In fact, ELLIS was established as a European response to the structured - and biased - investments that the United States and China have activated in the field of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI).

"This appointment, the third for a USI researcher after the previous ones of Jürgen Schmidhuber and Michael Bronstein, who is also co-director of the Geometric Deep Learning group of which I am now a member, represents a further acknowledgment for the leading research we perform in Lugano in the field of ML/AI", comments Prof. Alippi, who also holds the position of Pro-Rector for Internationalisation at USI. "The award recognises both the contributions to basic research and the derived collaborative work we do with industry, which for ELLIS is essential for the Europe to maintain a leading role in the field of ML/AI. In this regard, I am currently collaborating with a number of projects in Switzerland, albeit not part of ELLIS, that address the issue of environmental sustainability. Specifically, we are working on the development of solutions for the careful management of energy resources, for example with the prediction of consumption in cities or production in large photovoltaic plants. In addition, we have recently started a collaboration in the phytosanitary field that also involves Agroscope aimed at the development of intelligent traps for harmful insects".
