Institutional Communication Service

7 December 2020

The imminent end of the construction of the new USI-SUPSI University Campus has initiated the relocation into the new spaces. From September 2020, several Faculties, Institutes and Services of Università della Svizzera italiana have been moved to new buildings, classrooms and offices. Works will carry on until January 2021. It will be an opportunity to launch a series of contributions dedicated to the various moves and reconfigurations taking place within the entire university complex of Lugano.

The stages of the move - Who goes where

September 2020

The new building on the East Campus - USI-SUPSI Campus (Via la Santa 1, Viganello) welcomed the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences in early September. The Secretary and Dean's offices are now located on the second and third floor of Sector A of the new building. This new configuration has made it possible to reorganise the offices according to their functions and interactions with students. A move filled with "great expectation" by all the staff who told us how entering the new premises was an experience full of emotion. An emotion that grew with the arrival, in mid-September, of the first Master's students in biomedical sciences.

Concerning the new East Campus, please note that classrooms and offices will also progressively be populated by the Department of Innovative Technologies of SUPSI and the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA), a joint USI-SUPSI institute.

As far as the Lab is concerned, the building has welcomed the staff of the Academic Training, Research and Innovation Area (AFRI) of the EOC General Management, which at the end of the month moved on the second floor. The arrival of the EOC on Campus marks the ever-closer collaboration between the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences and the Cantonal Hospital.

November 2020

The Faculty of Informatics has left their original premises (Black Building) located on the West Campus to move into the new offices of the East Campus (Sector D). The move also involved the Institute of Computational Science (ICS), the Software Institute (SI), the Computer Systems Institute (SYS), the Advanced Learning and Research Institute (ALaRI) and the Sports Service, which together with the Faculty are occupying several floors of the building in Via La Santa 1:

P0: Faculty of Informatics Dean's Office and Desk (shared with USI Sport) + classrooms

P1: classrooms (floor shared with SUPSI)

P2: Computer Systems Institute + Faculty

P3: Software Institute

P4: Faculty

P5: Institute of Computational Science + Faculty

After an intense moving phase, made possible thanks to the excellent coordination by the staff, this new configuration finally sees the Faculty of Informatics united under one roof. For professors and researchers, it was an opportunity to do the so-called "spring cleaning" before packing their things. However, the work is not yet finished and will keep the staff busy for the next few weeks.

The Start-up Promotion Center, a centre that offers promotion services for ideas and projects related to the corporate world, has moved from 11 November from Via Carlo Maderno 24 to the second floor, sector C, of the East Campus (Via la Santa 1, Viganello). The new spaces are "modern, well lit and suitable for innovative start-ups. Functional spaces that ease aggregation and foster the creation of a "startup community" that will facilitate synergies with training and research for both USI and SUPSI". A move defined "challenging" by CP Start-up that says: "we did not move only the staff, but we had to coordinate our startups and the many stakeholders who interact with us. However, we approached the move with great enthusiasm and positive energy because we knew we were going to a new location suitable for a Start-up Promotion Center". And as in any good move, there is no lack of anecdotes to remember: "When we arrived at the new location many things were still to be settled. Still, the first question we received from one of our startups was: "Does the coffee machine work?"

The move also involves several institutions including the Institute of Health Communication (ICH) and the Institute of Public Health (IPH) that will respectively relocate to the second and third/fourth floor of the Lab. While with the beginning of December the Institute of Media and Journalism (IMeG), the Institute for Public Communication (ICP) and the Institute of Italian Studies (ISI) will found their new home in the Black Building. The Institute of Economic Research (IRE) has moved to the Blue Building.

Finally, it should be noted that the move will be an opportunity for a reorganisation and restyling of the buildings of the West Campus, which will continue for most of 2021, and which began with the installation of soundproofing panels on the ceiling of the cafeteria, which hopefully will be fully appreciated at the reopening scheduled for January, depending on the evolution of the anti-covid provisions.

The next articles dedicated to relocations will deal in particular with the reorganisation of central services and student services.
