One year after its first appearance in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings (WUR), in the new ranking for 2021 Università della Svizzera italiana has progressed and moved up into the 251-300 range (out of 1527 universities considered), a leap from the previous year when USI was in the 301-350 range (out of 1396 universities considered). USI also recorded a significant increase in "Industry income", the evaluation factor related to the impact of universities on the economy - the so-called 'knowledge transfer' - from 44 to 56.6 points.

The publication of THE World University Rankings for 2021 marks the beginning of the "new round" for USI, which thus continues on the path of international comparison, measured through methodologies and parameters that highlight its distinctive features, including research and international outlook. In fact, USI remains in the very first positions in terms of international perspective (third place globally for 'International Outlook') and, in national comparison, it confirms its eighth position (out of 11 universities considered), well ahead of the universities of Fribourg, Neuchâtel and St. Gallen.

In recent months, USI also distinguished itself in other global rankings: the QS World University Ranking 2021, in which the university was the best 'new entry', and the ranking - referred to 2020 - in which USI is recorded among the best 414 'young' universities.
