Security evaluation for automotive systems and lightweight cryptography standardization

Abstract:

This talk consists of two parts with different topics.

Part 1

In response to the recent Jeep hacking and recalls based on information security vulnerability in 2015, the significance of secure system design has become increasingly important in the automotive industry and security guidelines such as JASO TP 15002 and SAE J3061 have been published. In this talk, we focus on a security evaluation that consists of model definition, threat identification, and the risk analysis in JASO TP 15002. We present a detailed analysis which includes new methods  using illustrative examples such as CGW. As a result, we provide a solution with an improvement in terms of work efficiency over typical methods according to the JASO TP 15002.

Part 2

As more and more computers and controllers used for ICS (industrial control systems) or for vehicles go online, increased security is necessary for the compact devices which provide their internet connections. This new advance infrastructure is called IoT (Internet of Things). ISO/IEC JTC1/SC27/WG2 and ITU-T SG17 have been developing international standards for the technology of information security such as algorithms and protocols. In this talk, we summarize the status of standardization of lightweight cryptology. Our focus is on lightweight hash functions and efficient MAC algorithms, and its applications.

 

Biography:

Hirotaka is currently a senior research scientist at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). Her main research area is information security. Her research focuses on cryptographic primitives, protocols as well as secure system design. Her favorite research topics are hash functions. Her current interest is lightweight cryptography and secure system design for automotives. Her favorite hash function is Lesamnta-LW adopted in ISO/IEC 29192-5 (2016). She received the B.S. degree from Meiji University, Japan, in 1999, the M.S. degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan) in 2001, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from KU Leuven, Belgium, in 2013. From 2001 to 2016, she was with the Research & Development Group, Hitachi, Ltd. Since 2007, she has contributed to develop four standards as the project leader (editor) in ISO/IEC JTC1/SC27/WG2 and ITU-T SG17. In 2013, she won the award of industrial standardization that has been granted by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). She gave lectures on cryptology and secure system design at the University of Fukui in Japan in 2017 as a visiting lecturer. She is a member of IACR, IPSJ, and JSAE.
