Compression in computer graphics:

Staff - Faculty of Informatics

Start date: 2 July 2012

End date: 3 July 2012

The Faculty of Informatics is pleased to announce a seminar given by Libor Váša

DATE: Monday, July 02nd, 2012

PLACE: USI Università della Svizzera italiana, room SI-008, Informatics building  (Via G. Buffi 13)

TIME: 14.00

ABSTRACT:
The talk is going to give an overview of some recent advances in efficient representation of static and animated surface meshes, that sometimes allow lossy compression rates of more than 500:1 without any visible loss of quality. Apart from giving some details about the basic ideas that stand behind the current most efficient approaches, we are also going to point out their weaknesses. We will mainly focus on the lack of perceptually related error measure, and we will also discuss the recent attempts to resolve this issue. It will be shown, that the recently proposed distortion measures make a lot of previous work on compression obsolete, and that it opens a wide new area for future research of efficient representation of geometrical data.

BIO:
Ing. Libor Váša, Ph.D., received his doctorate in 2008 from the University of West Bohemia, Pilsen, Czech Republic, for his work on compressing dynamic 3D meshes, which has been carried out within the framework of the FP6 European projects 3DTV and Intuition. Since then, he has worked as a full time researcher in the project Centre of Computer Graphics funded by Czech Ministry of Education, focusing on improving the efficiency of the static and dynamic mesh compression, especially in the context of distortion perception by a human observer.

Since February 2012 he continues his work as a researcher at TU Chemnitz, Germany. Libor Váša is the author or co-author of 7 journal papers, 10 conference papers, a book chapter, a tutorial and a STAR report on compression of dynamic meshes and its perceptual aspects. More information about his work can be found at http://compression.kiv.zcu.cz .
