The Faculty of Informatics is pleased to announce a seminar given by Dr. Sebastien Goasguen

TITLE: Virtual Organization Clusters and new trends in distributed computing
SPEAKER: Dr. Sebastien Goasguen, School of computing at Clemson University
DATE: Wednesday, August 19th, 2009
PLACE: USI Università della Svizzera italiana, room SI-006, Informatics building (Via G. Buffi 13)
TIME: 14.30

ABSTRACT:
Grid systems are being re-architected to take advantage of virtualization techniques and new modes of interacting with resources such as cloud computing. In this talk we will present a model that unifies past views on grids and virtual organizations and newly revamped paradigm in on-demand and utility computing. Virtual Organization Clusters will be introduced as clusters of resources that span wide area network, are made of virtual machines, are provisioned dynamically in response to demand and are dedicated to a specific user or groups of users. We will also present a survey of projects in virtualization and cloud computing and where we see this trend go.
Finally we will discuss how these topics can be used in the classroom to build exciting courses in distributed computing.

BIO:
Dr. Sebastien Goasguen is an assistant professor in the school of computing at Clemson University. He joined Clemson in October 2006 after 6 years at Purdue University. He teaches a graduate course on cyberinfrastructure and an undergraduate course on distributed systems and cluster computing. He is a member of the Open Science Grid council. During his time at Purdue he was the TeraGrid site lead and co-investigator on the Purdue CMS Tier-2 site. His research interest has settled in the engineering and modeling of cyberinfrastructure systems to support Virtual Organizations. These days he studies autonomic virtualized grid systems for high throughput computing. His webpage is at http://runseb.googlepages.com
