TITLE: Application of Language Models to Criminal Data

ABSTRACT
As part of the UK Government Funded ESPRC project iMov, we have successfully used probabalistic language models to analyse
data from a police digital archive which recorded crimes over a 3 year period from an inner city district. The data extracted from
the archive contain text descriptions of crimes and structured data, both of which reveal information about the behaviour of the offender.
Language Modelling has been used for two distinct applications: Firstly we can prioritise suspects (who have past recorded crimes) for a
yet unsolved crime by assuming that the same offender will commit crimes in a similar way. Secondly we can determine behavioural
differences between offenders of different genders and ages. These models not only provide useful analysis of this particular kind of data,
they also required extension of Language Modelling Technology beyond its traditional IR applications.
BIOGRAPHY
Dr Richard Bache is a senior researcher at the Department of Computer and Information Science of the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK.
He is currently working on the EPSRC project iMOV on geographical and behavioural profiling of serial crimes using information
retrieval and text mining techniques. Previously he worked with Amazon at their research lab in Edinburgh. He holds a PhD in Mathematics.
