ABSTRACT:
Content summarization is becoming a key technology to allow users to skim and quickly capture the overall meaning and sense of the content they are exposed to. This is particularly important in user generated content that can be large in volume and very often highly redundant.
In this talk, we present a novel video summarization system which has also be employed in TRECVID 2008. The goal is to create an video excerpt that includes the main objects and events in the content with minimum redundance and minimum duration. The content is firstly segmented into shots, and then a multi-stage clustering algorithm is applied to eliminate shots with high degree of similarity. The relevance of the content depends on both its temporal variation and spatial salience. Content relevance is computed based on its temporal and spatial characteristics and it is used to select the most interesting video clips that then will compose the resulting summarization. Considerations about the rendering of the video summarization will be also presented. The talk also will briefly discuss some of the collaborations with Unisi on resource definition on collaborative tagging systems and context-aware information access.
