On Tuesday, 12 November 2024, the Faculty of Informatics at Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) welcomed students from Mendrisio High School. As part of their Insight Day focused on elective courses in Informatics, they participated in a one-day workshop about the Internet of Things using Arduino.
A total of 11 students took part in the activity, 2 female students and 9 male students, all attending their third of high school. The day was structured into theoretical and practical sessions. The young participants were welcomed and guided by Alberto Ferrante, a lecturer-researcher at the Faculty of Informatics at USI, and Luca Butera, a PhD assistant at the same faculty. They provided explanations about the Internet of Things (IoT) and how it functions. Using Arduino boards, the high school students engaged in hands-on exercises to learn how to build IoT devices. They started with simple projects and gradually progressed to a more complex application, such as a device for measuring heartbeat and blood oxygen levels.
