We are pleased to announce the following talk by Prof Maier on the role of different AI and ML techniques for the management of infrastructures such as water distribution networks and natural resources such as rivers, wetlands, and aquatic environments.

Abstract
In this presentation, Prof. Maier will provide an overview of his research on various aspects of the development and application of improved methods for infrastructure and natural resources management, including modelling and simulation, optimisation and decision-making.  He will then provide more in-depth discussion on one or more of these aspects, depending on audience interest.  Potential topics include:
Artificial Neural Networks: Applications (forecasting salinity in rivers, forecasting cyanobacterial concentrations in rivers, predicting optimal alum dose and predicting chlorine residuals in water distribution systems)
Artificial Neural Networks: Methodological Advances (input selection, data division, selection of model structure, model calibration (incorporating uncertainty))
Integrated Modelling (assessment of the impact of climate variability and change on irrigated agriculture, assessment of the impact of climate variability and change on urban water supply security and management of flooding, dryland salinity and the ecological integrity of wetlands in the upper south east of South Australia)
Evolutionary Optimisation Algorithms: Methodological Advances (determination of optimal parameters for genetic algorithms, determination of optimal parameters for ant colony optimisation algorithms and identification of fitness landscape characteristics)
Evolutionary Optimisation Algorithms: Genetic Algorithm Applications (optimal tradeoffs between cost and greenhouse gas emissions for water distribution systems, optimal scale of greywater reuse systems and optimal design and operation of water distribution systems using artificial neural network metamodels)
Evolutionary Optimisation Algorithms: Ant Colony Optimisation Algorithm Applications (optimisation of water distribution systems, optimisation of hydropower maintenance schedules and optimisation of environmental flow allocations for wetlands and floodplains)
Robust Decision Making: Methodological Advances (robust multi criteria decision analysis, management option rank equivalence (MORE) method)
Biography
Holger Maier is Professor of Integrated Water Systems Engineering in the School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering at the University of Adelaide.  Prior to joining the university in 1999, he worked as a consultant in the private and public sectors in South Australia, as Senior Civil Engineer with the Western Samoa Water Authority and as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of British Columbia.  His research is focussed on developing improved techniques for the sustainable management of water resources and infrastructure in an uncertain environment and includes elements of modelling, optimisation and multi criteria and uncertainty analysis.  He has in excess of 200 publications and has received a number of national and international awards for his teaching and research, such as the Australian Award for University Teaching and the Biennial Medial from the International Environmental Modelling and Software Society.
