Ascona, Monte Verita

Scope

Replication is a technique that has been addressed by two communities: the database community and the distributed computing community. These two communities have looked at replication from different points of view and with different goals. Replication in the database community aims to increase performance. Replication in the distributed computing community aims to fault tolerance. Recently, these different goals have started to come closer: there has been work showing that efficiency and strong consistency can sometimes be reconciled. The goal of the seminar is to allow the two communities to meet and exchange experiences. The seminar does not intend to speculate about the future, but rather to understand the past, by analyzing past successes and past failures, and to make an assessment of about 30 years of research on replication.
